Nilsen has published on political economy, European politics, and international affairs. He appears in the December 2004 issue of the European Business Law Review with an article on corporate governance and takeovers in the European Union.

Nilsen brought the Model United Nations concept to Norway, having organized several award-winning delegations to Harvard World Model United Nations conferences around the world, and is the founder of the Norway Model United Nations Society.

Nilsen is also the founder and past president of the Oxford University Capitalism Society, which organized speaker and discussion events on politics, economics, and philosophy at the University of Oxford.
