hummingbird in thesubfamily Trochilinae . It was long considered a doubtfully distinctspecies , but more recently it is generally treated as asubspecies of theRufous-tailed Hummingbird , "A. tzacatl".It is endemic to
Isla Escudo de Veraguas inPanama . Except for its larger size, it is similar to the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Its naturalhabitat is tropical moistshrubland and woodland. With a total range estimated at only 3 km², it is potentially threatened byhabitat loss orinvasive species .When it was still considered a good species, it was classified as
Vulnerable species by theIUCN , noting that any evidence of a declining population could lead to an uplisting toCritically Endangered status [BLI (2004)] . In 2008, it was removed from theIUCN Red List however, as only good species are included therein [BLI (2008a,b)] .Footnotes
