Vyners School

Vyners School

Vyners School is a "specialist mathematics & computing college" located on Warren Road in Ickenham, Hillingdon, England. Registered by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust it is a comprehensive school with approximately 1200 students from Year Seven to Sixth form, and approximately 200 teachers (although this number varies due to cover teaching staff). The school has six houses, all with meaning to the school's history. They are: Cheshire, Fry, Gell, Huxley, John Miles and Windsor. Of these, Cheshire and Gell were added to the original four, in about 1977, when the school expanded.

The current Head teacher is Mrs Susan A Gould, who is also a maths teacher at the school and took over 1 September 2007. She replaced Brian P Houghton, who retired in 2007.

Former Key Stage 3 co-ordinator and science teacher Mr Seamus T Foley died at the age of 53 on February 15th 2007. Veteran Foley had been a member of staff at Vyners since 1976, and was an active teacher until late January 2007 when he was diagnosed with what turned out to be a fatal cancer. Foley was not the first Vyners teacher to die in harness. Mr Weston, who taught British Constitution and History, did - on a School trip to the USA in about 1977.

It is the school which former Football Icon winner Sam Hurrell [ [http://www.sky.com/skyone/footballicon Sky One Football Icon] ] attended, and it is noted for its rugby teams [ [http://www.hillingdon.com/sport Hillingdon Sport] .]

History

Vyners School was founded in the 1960s as a grammar school. This project received help from John Miles (the headmaster of Bishopshalt School at the time), and one of the houses is now named after him. The first Headmaster was Mr. Trevor Jaggar. He left in summer 1967, to become an H.M.I. For the Autumn term, the Acting Head was Mr. Richard Fox, the respected Deputy Head. Mr Derek (D.C.) Best was appointed Headmaster from the start of 1968, and stayed - certainly until 1975. The school came up with the motto 'Abide in me', which is displayed below the school crest. The school has the theme of "service", which mainly comes from the founders and is reflected in the people chosen for the house names (the school did not start with six forms of entry upon opening - throughout the 60's and into the 70's, it had a four form entry). Vyners is now considered one of the best schools in the area and many people move house just to get their child into the catchment area.Fact|date=July 2007

Sporting successes in the past have included successive English Schools Senior Netball Championships - 1970 and 1971; a British Youth Shot Putt champion [1970] ; and numerous Borough and County Championships, team and individual.
