Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, inHesse ,Germany .The Ruins of the Waterburg
According to the English version of the visitors brochure, the castle of Waterburg is mentioned for the first time in 1302. However, the brochure does not specify where this is mentioned. By the end of the 14 century, Friedewald was given the distinction as a Hessian administrative district. The castle was rebuilt in the late 15th century (circa 1476 - 1489) by architect Hans-Jakob von Ettlingen. The castle ruins that exist on the site today are from that rebuilding period in the late 15th century. In 1605, the well in the front court was built. Between the years 1615 and 1648 the changed its owner several times. Headwaiter Fugger, General Tilly and Captain Hanibal all owned the castle during this period. In 1762, during the Napoleonic wars, the castle was destroyed by a portion of the French army under the command of Captain Steinville. The brochure does not provide anymore information. One can assume that more events involving the castle took place from the late 11th century to the present date.
