- XM1156 Precision Guidance Kit
The XM1156 Precision Guidance Kit is a
U.S. Army program to develop aprecision guidance system for existing 155 mmartillery shell s. [http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/m1156.htm XM1156 Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) - Global Security] ] The prime contractor isAlliant Techsystems , leading a team includingRockwell Collins and Draper Labs.Overview
In operation the PGK will screw into the nose of the
projectile much like the existingfuze . However as well as the fuzing function it will provide aGPS guidance package andcontrol surfaces to correct the flight of the shell. This is analogous to the addition of aJDAM tail-kit to a dumb iron bomb, creating aprecision guided munition . The system is currently expected to begin production in2009 , and to be in-service by2010 .cite web|url=http://defensenews.com/story.php?F=2793630&C=america|title=ATK To Make Precision Artillery Shell - defensenews.com]pecifications
