"Hisonotus" is a genus of catfishes (order Siluriformes) of the family Loricariidae.

Taxonomy

"Hisonotus" and "Microlepidogaster" have, until recently, been considered as synonymous, although they are now recognized as separate and valid taxa.cite journal|url=http://www.scielo.br/pdf/gmb/v29n1/28170.pdf|last=Andreata|first=Artur Antonio|coauthors=Oliveira, Claudio; Foresti, Fausto|title=Karyological characterization of four Neotropical fish species of the genus "Hisonotus" (Teleostei, Loricariidae, Hypoptopomatinae) from distinct Brazilian river basins|journal=Genet. Distribution

"Hisonotus" species mostly occur in Atlantic coastal streams of southern Brazil and the Paraguay-Paraná system ofsouthern South America.cite journal|url=http://digitallibrary.amnh.org/dspace/bitstream/2246/2886/1/N3333.pdf|title=A New Species of "Hisonotus" (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) of the Upper Río Uruguay Basin|first=Adriana E.|last=Aquino|coauthors=Schaefer, Scott A.; Miquelarena, Amalia M.|journal=American Museum Novitates|issue=3333|pages=1–12|date=June 22, 2001|format=PDF] They are also distributed in the Río de La Plata basin and coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil.cite journal|journal=Copeia|year=2003|issue=3|pages=588–593|title="Hisonotus insperatus": New Species, from the Upper Rio Paraná Basin (Pisces: Ostariophysi: Loricariidae)|first=Heraldo A.|last=Britski|coauthors=Garavello, Júlio C.|doi=10.1643/CI-02-23R|volume=2003]

Description

Species of "Hisonotus" are the only representatives of the tribe Otothyrini having serrae on the posterior edge of the pectoral fin spine.

Ecology

"Hisonotus" species are small fishes, generally found in small fast flowing streams, where they grasp to the branches and leaves of aquatic or subaquatic plants.
