Coomoora Secondary College is a public, co-educational, Secondary school located in Springvale South, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The college celebrated its 30th birthday in 2006 with events, like the Police VS Students Soccer match and a school band playing all time favourites and originals.

History

Coomoora Secondary was established in 1976. Formerly known as Springvale South High School, the school had a culturally and linguistically diverse population, with the majority of students coming from a European background. More recently, the school has a large number of students from south east Asia, and now has a small but growing number of students from Africa.

Houses

The houses are named after the names of some Australian animals using one of the Aboriginal Languages. They are usually lead by two to five Year 12 students per house, directed as Captain and Vice Captain. These houses provide competition between each other in three major sports carnivals hosted each year - the Athletics, Swimming and Cross-Country carnivals. The points earned in these carnivals award the house with a golden trophy at the end of the year.

Facilities

The Investing In Our Schools program provided $149000 to assist with the upgrade of the Performing Arts Centre. There is now a big screen, tiered seating for more than 150 people and technology for sound, lighting and visuals.

Music is a big part of Coomoora Secondary College. Musical groups include Black Arrow; a band of year 12 students which consists of Drums, Lead Vocals, Electric Guitar, Electric keyboard. Also, Jr Band; a mixture of Year 8 Students which consists of Trumpet, Piano, Drums, and Saxophone.

After the departure of the Year 12 students who were in the Year 12 Rock band, Year 8 students have made their own band, playing modern day pop songs.

Both bands have played at many school assemblies.

A school production of Guys and Dolls (currently being produced) is being organised by a group of staff and students, led by the vocal teacher, Ms Casey-Dalgleish.

Sister School

Coomoora Secondary College has developed a sister school relationship with Harima Minami Senior High School, Japan. Harima Minami students and staff have visited for the last four consecutive years and Coomoora Secondary College students and staff have been on two return visits. The Japanese students are hosted by Coomoora students' and their families and vice versa. Students and staff alike have found it to be a rewarding experience.

Future Projects

Coomoora Secondary College is involved in a proposal to merge with three other schools around the area - Heatherhill Secondary College, Chandler Secondary College and Springvale Secondary College [cite web
