Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor is an Autonomous Body under the control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi. The Institute produces Antirabies Vaccine (Sheep-brain BPL inactivated) and the DTP group of vaccines. The Institute is in the final stages of production of a new cell culture based (Vero Cell) rabies vaccine for human use. The cell culture vaccine for animal use has been supplied for immunization of animals since 1988. The Institute also conducts research in vaccine development and imparts training in vaccine related fields. The Institute also offers diagnostic services for rabies. It is located in Coonoor.
Production of vaccines
The details of vaccines produced and supplied during 1997-98 and 1998-99 (up to October 1998) are given in Table below.

- Tissue culture vaccine production
The purified batches of Vero Cell Rabies Vaccine were found to contain Rc DNA within the acceptable limits. The crude concentrate material of Vero Cell Rabies Vaccine was purified by Zonal Centrifugation. These batches contained residual cellular DNA within the acceptable limits and passes the in-process quality control tests. The final stage of production (lyophilization) is yet to be completed.
