He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 19th round of the 1999 MLB draft and signed with the Dodgers on June 14 1999. However, his contract with the Dodgers was voided on September 7 for unspecified reasons and he did not play professionally until signed by the New York Mets on December 20 2000.

He played for the Mets Rookie level team in Kingsport in 2001 as well as their "A" ball team in Brooklyn. With Brooklyn he was 9-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 11 starts. In 2002 he played with the Capital City Bombers of the South Atlantic League and again performed well, going 13-7, 3.88 in 22 starts.

In 2003 he was transferred to the Mets High-A team, the St. Lucie Mets where he had another good year, 7-3, 2.93 in 13 starts.

The Mets traded Eckert to the Los Angeles Dodgers the following spring and he reported for action with the Dodgers "AA" team in Jacksonville. However, after only three starts he was promoted to the "AAA" team, the Las Vegas 51s. In 2007 with Las Vegas, he compiled a record of 0-2, 6.38 era in 16 games (2 as a starter). He was released by the 51s on July 8 and is currently a free agent.
