The USS "Maricopa County" (LST-938) was an sclass|LST-542|tank landing ship built for the
United States Navy duringWorld War II .LST-563 was laid down on
4 March 1944 atEvansville, Indiana by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company; launched on1 May 1944 ; sponsored by Mrs. N. E. Senescall; and commissioned on20 May 1944 with Lieutenant J. B. Hockswender, USNR, in command. During World War II, LST-563 was grounded onClipperton Island in the easternPacific , 670 miles southwest ofMexico , on21 December 1944 and suffered extensive damage. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to free her, LST-563 was stripped and abandoned on9 February 1945 . She was struck from theNaval Vessel Register on23 February 1945 .References
