- Language Line
Language Line is a language resources company based in
London . It was founded byMichael Young , Lord Young of Dartington, as a charitable project in April 1990. The driving force behind this was Young's identification of exclusion faced by ethnic minorities speaking little English when trying to access public services. Telephone interpreting was developed as an innovative solution to this problem, enabling organisations to communicate effectively with anyone, whatever their language.Language Line was first set up to enable communication between patients and staff at the
Royal London Hospital in East London. Initially covering just four languages, interpreting services were made available free of charge due to funding from grants. The local police heard about Language Line and started to use it in dealing with racial harassment cases in theIsle of Dogs . In response to their needs, the service was made available 24 hours a day.In October 1992, as demand for language support spread steadily across the UK, Language Line became a
limited company . Since then the coverage of telephone interpreting has continually expanded and now spans more than 150 languages. Over the years the Company has evolved to become a complete language solutions provider following the successful development of our translation services and the more recent introduction of face to face interpreting in 2003. The same moral ethos of ensuring equal access for all regardless of their ethnic origin, underpins the Company today.External links
