Idyllic Retreat or Social Backwater?That really depends on when you visit. Hütterscheid is surrounded by hills and forest and is the perfect location for walking, biking and just escaping. If you like nature, it is like a living encyclopedia with deer, badgers, hares, rabbits and myriad wild birds easily and readily seen. When all there is to hear is the birds in the trees and you can watch the buzzards and red kites soaring on the thermals, it is truly idyllic.

Sadly, those moments are all too rare. Hütterscheid is inhabited by a few (and I have to stress A FEW) people whose aim in life seems to be making as much noise as possible. Hip hop and techno music like an open air concert almost every day for hours on end. Mofas, mopeds and cross bikes race through the village (or up and down the village like demented zoo bears) as if it were their own personal race track. Cars speed through the village with their stereos blaring paying scant attention to the unenforceable 30kph speed limit. Then there are the endless firecrackers in winter. It is like a modern-day Wild West.

The worst thing though is that nobody actually seems to care.

This could be a truly wonderful place to live, you just have to choose the right moment to do it.
