Breitenthal is a municipality in the district of Birkenfeld, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

= History =The year 1282 is the earliest date the town is mentioned in a document as the ownership of the farm Breidendale changed from Konrad of Schmidtburg to his brother Gottfried of Kyrburg, the Wild- and Rhinegrave from the nearby castle Kyrburg of Kirn. The Wild- and Rhinegrave owned Breitenthal till 1795.

1795 to 1814 Breitenthal was French Territory.

From 1815 to 1937 the district of Birkenfeld, including Breitenthal was an exclave of the Ducy of Oldenburg. To the End of WW II the area was a part of Prussia.
