That year he completed a famous double by capturing both Munster and All-Ireland medals in hurling, as well as both Munster and All-Ireland medals in football. Murphy went on to have further success with the Cork under-21 hurlers. In 1976 he captained the side to provincial and All-Ireland victories. Murphy won a second Munster under-21 hurling title in 1977.enior
Although never winning a senior Munster hurling title on the field of play, he did come on as a substitute during the 1977 All-Ireland final against Wexford to claim an All-Ireland medal. Murphy later went on to have some success with the senior footballers. He won Munster football honours in 1983, on a day when Cork denied Kerry a record ninth consecutive provincial title.
