Leila Bronia Josefowicz (born
October 20 ,1977 inToronto, Ontario ,Canada ) is a classicalviolin ist.While a young child her family moved to
Los Angeles, California where she started studying violin at the age of three and a half using theSuzuki method . Her father, physicistJack Josefowicz , learned with her until "out of the mouths of babes" she told him that "it would be better if you didn't play." At five, she started formal lessons with Idel Low. At eight she began studies with the distinguished violin teacherRobert Lipsett atThe Colburn School .At age 13 her family moved to
Philadelphia so she could attend the prestigiousCurtis Institute of Music where she studied withJaime Laredo ,Joseph Gingold ,Felix Galimir , andJascha Brodsky .Still in her teens, she played with the symphonic orchestras of Philadelphia, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Boston, Montreal and Toronto.
Josefowicz made her
Carnegie Hall debut in 1994 performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto withSir Neville Marriner and theAcademy of St. Martin in the Fields .The same year she signed an exclusive recording contract with Philips Classics, recording the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius concertos. Other recordings that followed include masterworks for solo violin, recital reperoire and the concertos of romantic and modern composers.
She has kept a busy international schedule as a soloist, performing regularly around the world including North and South America, Europe, Japan, China, New Zealand and Australia. She has a strong interest in
jazz , improvisation, and new music.Ms. Josefowicz is acclaimed for championing new compositions, including the works of John Adams and Oliver Knussen. During upcoming concert seasons, Ms. Josefowicz will premiere concertos written for her by
Esa-Pekka Salonen with theLos Angeles Philharmonic ; Steve Mackey with the St. Louis Symphony; and Colin Matthews with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.Ms. Josefowicz received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994. In 2007, she was named a USA Cummings Fellow,
United States Artists . Ms. Josefowicz is a 2008MacArthur Fellow .She was formerly married to the conductor
Kristjan Järvi , and they have a son, Lukas. She and Lukas currently live in New York City.Ms. Josefowicz performs on a [Guarnerius] Del Gesù made in 1724.
