USS Sirius (AF-60) was an "Sirius"-class
stores ship acquired by theU.S. Navy . Her task was to carry stores, refrigerated items, and equipment to ships in the fleet, and to remote stations and staging areas."Sirius", ex-"SS Tradewind" (MC hull 185), was laid down on
5 January 1942 byMoore Dry Dock Co.,Oakland, California ; launched on11 April 1942 ; sponsored by Mrs. Olga Johnson; and delivered to theMaritime Administration on30 April 1943 .Cargo assignments
"Sirius" was acquired by the
U.S. Navy from theMaritime Administration on18 May 1956 and commissioned on12 January 1957 atSan Francisco, California . On26 April , she sailed for Sasebo,Japan , arriving on14 May . "Sirius" was to spend most of her commissioned service plying between ports in the Far East and with theU.S. 7th Fleet . She supplied fleet units inJapan ;Hong Kong , B.C.C.; thePhilippine Islands ;Okinawa ; andTaiwan .Decommissioning
"Sirius" was struck from the
Navy list on1 August 1965 and returned to theMaritime Administration . She was subsequently sold to West Waterway Lumber Co.,Seattle, Washington , on13 April 1971 .References
