Early life
Dee was born Ruby Ann Wallace in
Cleveland, Ohio , the daughter of Gladys Hightower and Marshall Edward Nathaniel Wallace, a cook, waiter, and porter. After her mother left the family, Dee's father married Emma Amelia Benson, a schoolteacher.
