History
Dawson, which opened in fall 2009, relieved students from the over-crowded Pearland High School. Dawson serves sections of Pearland, sections of Brookside Village, and unincorporated areas (including Silverlake).[3][4] The school was named after former Texas Representative Glenda Dawson who also taught for 34 years at Pearland High School, before joining the Texas legislature. The groundbreaking ceremony occurred on August 1, 2007 with the school opening for the start of the 2009-10 school year. In fall 2007, the current Pearland Ninth Grade Center, was converted into a temporary Dawson High School for two years serving 9th and 10th graders the first year and 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in the second year.
Dawson High School's mascot is also the Eagles, coincidentally sharing the same mascot as another Pearland elementary school, Challenger Elementary. The school colors are red, white, and blue. The school motto is: "Some Fly, We Soar."
Extracurricular activities
Dawson High School has many extracurricular activities available. Sports include football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, water polo, cross country, golf, tennis, and track. Other extracurricular activities include Theater, marching band, concert band, dance, color guard, and drill team. Dawson has had early successes as a young school. The football team reached the semi-finals in the 4A football playoffs before losing to the eventual state champions, Lake Travis in its first year with seniors. The track team also has had early success, making the state meet without seniors in 2009, and having one of the fastest 4x400 relay teams in the nation. The marching band and color guard has also made state competition in its first year with seniors, and the color guard was the 4A varsity state champion in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.
