hurling with his local clubRussell Rovers , who play in theCork Junior Hurling Championship . He also plays with the University College Cork team in theCork Senior Hurling Championship . He usually plays on the half-back line or in midfield.Inter-county
Hartnett first came to prominence as a hurler in 2001. That year Cork lost the Munster minor final to Tipperary, however, the team later won the All-Ireland title via the back-door system. Hartnett played a key role at midfield during that victory. The next few years lacked any further hurling honours, however, in 2005 Hartnett was at centre-back when Cork won the Munster under-21 title. That same year he joined the Cork senior hurling panel.
Hartnett made his senior debut as a substitute against Clare in the 2007 Munster quarter-final. As a result of the suspension of
Seán Óg Ó hAilpín Hartnett will start his first senior championship game in the Munster semi-final against Waterford onJune 17 ,2007 .Commonly Mistaken Identity
