It is the association responsible for the promotion of automotive sport in India under the International Sporting Code of the FIA.
Globally, all motorsport is governed by the FIA. The FIA appoints an ASN for each of its member countries. The ASN is the only recognised holder of the Sporting Power for all branches of motor sport in its country. There is only one ASN per country. For India, this is the Motorsports Association of India. The MAI is the direct motor sport representative of India within the FIA.
The MAI is also a member of the Commission International de Karting (CIK), which is the Commission of the FIA that deals with world karting.
It runs the Indian National Rally Championship (INRC), and other Karting events.
As the sole recognised body of the FIA and CIK, the MAI is the only authority permitted to issue FIA licences for all levels of motorsport in India.
MAI has responsibilities to the competitors, drivers and the affiliated clubs, as well as to the government, the public, the FIA and the CIK. Along with its administrative role, MAI is concerned with the fitness of drivers, track standards and safety, the construction and eligibility of vehicles, all aspects of safety, administration of justice and the development of motor sport in India.
The MAI has offices that are staffed by full-time and part-time professionals. A number of Commissions and specialist advisors are vital parts of the National Operations.
