The USS Force (AM-445) was an
Aggressive class minesweeper : laid down,26 August 1952 at J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp.,Tacoma, Washington ; launched,26 June 1953 ; commissioned USS Force (AM-445),4 January 1955 ; redesignated as an Ocean Minesweeper, MSO-445,7 February 1955 .Armament: as built, one single 40mm
gun mount , two .50 cal.machine gun s, final configuration, bow gun replaced by one twin 20mmgun mount , two .50 cal.machine guns remain.Pacific Ocean operations
USS Force reported to Mine Force, Pacific Fleet, at
Long Beach, California ,20 January 1955 , and sailed along theCalifornia coast in training exercises until1 May 1956 . She departed then for her first tour of duty in the Far East, during which she made a good will cruise of ports in the northern islands ofJapan , as well as training with ships of theChinese Nationalist Navy. Damaged bytyphoons in August, she was repaired at Sasebo andYokosuka, Japan , and returned toLong Beach, California ,15 November . Special operations took Force to thePanama Canal Zone between30 August 1957 and6 December . She returned toLong Beach, California , for exercises and preparations for her next deployment to theU.S. 7th Fleet , completed between3 November 1958 and1 June 1959 . During this time, she again trained with Chinese ships, as well as theKorea n and Thai navies.On 2 November, she sailed with her division and
USS Greer County (LST-799) for combined amphibious and minesweeping exercises out ofKodiak, Alaska ; in these operations her group was joined by ships of the RoyalCanadian Navy . During these maneuvers USS Force collected hydrographic data, and served as home base for an explosive ordnance demolition team. She returned by way ofVancouver, British Columbia , and San Francisco toLong Beach, California ,16 December 1959 . In February 1960 USS Force was on station formissile nosecone recovery duty and during the balance of the year participated in exercise "Steeple Jack," a "Phiblex 60" exercise and local operations.USS Force was lost by fire off
Guam ,24 April 1973 .References
