Departmental history
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was established in
1808 , [http://www.slmpd.org/history/index.htm SLMPD: History] ] only five years after St. Louis became part of the United States as a result of theLouisiana Purchase , and thirteen years beforeMissouri was admitted as a state. The department was created with only four officers, who received no pay. In1861 , the department was reorganized under state control as the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.Line of duty deaths
From April 28, 1836, to February 21, 2007, the Officer Down Memorial Page reported that there were 163 line of duty deaths in the St. Louis Police Department. gunfire , and only 3 of those were accidental. It was also reported by the ODMP that an additional 38 deaths were caused by automobile-related incidents, and 3 by heart attacks.References
