The St. Louis County Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency serving St. Louis County in the U.S. state of Missouri.

The department is responsible for law enforcement and investigations within unincorporated St. Louis County and contracted municipalities. The SLCPD offers services to its citizens, including patrol, drug enforcement, bomb and arson investigations, homicide, child abuse, traffic enforcement, tactical operations, flight operations, K9 and more.

Departamental history

The St. Louis County Police Department was established in 1955. The department was created with 95 officers and 18 civilian employees [ [http://www.stlouisco.com/police/history1.html St. Louis County Police History ] ] . The department is divided into four divisions: Patrol, Operationl Support, Special Operations, and Criminal Investigation. It is the third largest local police agency in the state, the only county police department in Missouri and one of only a few in the United States. In 2003, the department started a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), which originated in Memphis, TN, in order to better serve citizens with mental illness. Metro Air Support

In 2004, the St. Louis County Police Department, the St. Louis Police Department, and the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department joined together to share resoures and created the Metro Air Support. Metro Air Support, as of July 2, 2007, boasts 4 helicopters, 1 fixed wing airplane, 11 pilots, and 8 Crew Chiefs [ [http://www.metroairsupport.com/protecting.html Metro Airborne Law Enforcement of St. Louis, Mo ] ] . The department also provides officers for the major case squad.
