- Abd al Kuri
Abd al Kuri ('Abd-al-Kūrī, وعبد الكوري) is an island between
Socotra andSomalia . Like all islands of the Socotra Archipelago, it belongs toYemen , specifically to theHadhramaut Governorate . It is part of the west Socotran district Qulansiyah wa 'Abd-al-Kūrī (قلنسيه وعبد الكوري), which derives part of its name from the island.Abd al Kuri is hilly, except for its flat central part around the
isthmus , and has area of 133 km². From the westernmost point, "Ra's Khayşat an Nawm ", to the easternmost point, "Ra's Anjara", the island is 36 km long. In width, it varies between 2.1 km (at the central isthmus) and 5.8 km (in the eastern part). It reaches a height of 256 meters at "Jabal Şāliḩ". The northern coast consists mostly of sandy beach, with a few rocky points. The southern coast consists of steep cliffs. To the east of Abd al Kuri are the islands ofSamhah andDarsah , that are collectively known as "Al Ikhwān" (The Brothers).A population of some three hundred lives in three villages. The main village is Kilmia, near the middle of the south coast, overlooking "Bandar Şāliḩ " (Level Bay), with a military garrison immediately northeast of it. The village in the east of Abd al Kuri and Kilmia are the southernmost settlements of Yemen.
The name of this island comes from the Portuguese name Abedal Curia.
