The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff ( _cy. Athrofa Prifysgol Cymru, Caerdydd, commonly abbreviated UWIC) is a higher education institution situated in Cardiff. It operates from four campuses: Llandaff on Western Avenue, Cyncoed, Colchester Avenue, and Howard Gardens in the City Centre. UWIC serves over 11,000 students, making it a mid-sized higher education provider.

UWIC offers courses in art and design, sciences, business and IT, teacher training, humanities, social sciences, health, sport, engineering, tourism and leisure. Study is available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, full-time and part-time, and research opportunities are offered.

UWIC has a number of high-profile research and enterprise centres, including the Food Industry Centre, the Welsh Centre for Tourism Research, and the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research. The Institute is also home to Wales' National Indoor Athletic Centre which is based at its Cyncoed campus.

UWIC was granted the Government’s Charter Mark for Excellence in Public Service in 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2007, a unique achievement in UK Higher Education.

History

1865 - The School of Art opened in the Old Free Library Building, St Mary’s Street, Cardiff.

1900- School of Art moved to the Technical Buildings in Dumfries Place, Cardiff.

1940 - (circa) Cardiff College of Food Technology and Commerce opened at Crwys Road.

1949 - The School of Art moved to the Friary.

1950 - Cardiff Training College opened at Heath Park.

1954 - Llandaff Technical College opened at Western Avenue, now the site of UWIC’s Llandaff Campus – home to science, design and engineering students.

1962 - Cardiff Training College moved to new buildings at Cyncoed Campus, and home of the Schools of Education and Sport.

1965 - The College of Art (as the Cardiff School of Art & Design was then called) moved to new buildings in Howard Gardens, now UWIC’s Howard Gardens Campus.

1966 - Cardiff College of Food Technology and Commerce moved to Colchester Avenue, now UWIC’s Colchester Avenue Campus and home to business, management, hospitality, tourism and food students.

1976 - The four colleges merged to form South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education.

1990 - The Institute changed its name to Cardiff Institute of Higher Education in preparation for incorporation.

1992 - In April, the Institute became incorporated. It was now an autonomous body, no longer under the jurisdiction of the local county council.

1993 - The Institute was given the power to award its own degrees in August but chose instead to strengthen the existing links with the University of Wales.

1996 - On April, the Institute became a college of the University of Wales and its name was changed to University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC).

2004 - UWIC’s status within the University of Wales was raised from University college to Constituent Institution, the highest level of membership.

ingapore Campus

UWIC is in the process of setting up an offshore campus in Singapore. The Campus, known as the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff: Asia Campus (UWIC, Asia Campus) will be the second offshore campus by a British tertiary Institution in the Republic (after Queen Margaret University) once it commences operations in late 2008 or early 2009. The Campus is expected to focus on Business and Management courses, and will be managed by the University's partner in Singapore, EASB. 50% of the faculty is expected to be from the Cardiff Campus.
