- Feminization (biology)
In
biology andmedicine , feminization refers to the development in anorganism of physical or behavioral characteristics unique to thefemale of thespecies . This may represent a normal developmental process, contributing tosexual differentiation .Feminization can also be induced by environmental factors, and this phenomenon has been observed in several animal species. Pathological feminization
In
animals , when feminization occurs in amale , or at an inappropriate developmental age, it is often due to a genetic or acquired disorder of theendocrine system . Inhuman s, one of the more common manifestations of abnormal feminization isgynecomastia , the inappropriate development ofbreast s which may result from elevated levels of feminizinghormone s such asestrogen s.cite book |author=Larsen, P. Reed; Williams, Robert L. |title=Williams textbook of endocrinology |publisher=W.B. Interestingly, in some cases, "high" levels ofandrogen s may produce both virilizing effects (increasedbody hair , deepenedvoice , increasedmuscle mass, etc.) and feminizing effects (gynecomastia) since androgens can be converted to estrogens byaromatase in the peripheral tissues.References
