- USS Kingfisher (1861)
The first USS Kingfisher was purchased by the Navy at
Boston, Massachusetts ,2 August 1861 ; and commissioned atBoston Navy Yard 3 October , Acting Lt. Joseph P. Couthouy in command. That day she was ordered to
Key West, Florida , for duty in theGulf Blockading Squadron . On21 January she joined Ethan Allen in capturing Olive Branch bound from Ceder Keys toNassau, Bahamas , with a cargo ofturpentine . She again cooperated with Ethan Allen26 January in manning and equipping a boatexpedition to the mouth of theManatee River which capturedsloop Mary Nevis and burned Confederatecavalry barracks . Three days later she took Spanishbrig Terisita ofHavana bound forMatamoras with acontraband cargo . On25 February USS Kingfisher overtookblockade runner Lion in theGulf of Mexico after a 3-day chase. The great risks involved in
blockade duty during the Civil War have not been generally recognized. The need for water, food, ortimber often forced parties from theUnion Navy ships to venture ashore in hostile territory. On2 June two boats from USS Kingfisher rowed upAucilla River ,Florida , to obtain fresh water. A Southern raiding party surprised theexpedition killing two men and capturing the remaining nine. Other landing parties from the bark fared better. Anexpedition destroyedsalt works at St. Joseph's Bay,Florida , which had produced some 200bushels a day. But the hardships ofblockade duty in the Gulf were unabated. Earlyscurvy became a serious problem for thecrew prompting Rear Admiral Lardner to order USS Kingfisher toBoston, Massachusetts . When theship had been repaired and hercrew reinvigorated, USS Kingfisher was assigned to theSouth Atlantic Blockading Squadron and ordered toPort Royal, South Carolina , where she arrived21 December .The bark was stationed in St. Helena Sound,
South Carolina , where she distinguished herself for efficiency inreconnaissance work and operations against small parties of Confederates ashore. On9 April 1863 a party from USS Kingfisher landed at Middleton's estate,Edisto Island ,South Carolina , and captured a group of Southerncavalrymen stationed there to observe and report activity of Union ships in the area. From time to time during the ensuing year, she shelled Confederate troops ashore and sent small landing parties inland to gather information and capture food for hercrew and forrefugees who had flocked to her for protection."Kingfisher" grounded on Combahee Bank in St. Helena Sound
28 March 1864 and filled with water. After efforts to save the stranded ship proved fruitless she wasabandoned 5 April .References
