Enticho

Enticho

Enticho is a town in northern Ethiopia. Located on the Inguya River in the Mehakelegnaw (Central) Zone of the Tigray Region, it has a latitude and longitude of coord|14|16|N|39|09|E| with an elevation of 1964 meters above sea level.

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency, in 2005 Enticho has an estimated total population of 9,048 of whom 4,415 were males and 4,633 were females. [ [http://www.csa.gov.et/text_files/2005_national_statistics.htm CSA 2005 National Statistics, Table B.4] ] The 1994 census reported it had a total population of 5,198 of whom 2,351 were males and 2,847 were females. It is the largest settlement in Enticho woreda.

Enticho is the location where in 1 July 1889 that Fitawrari Dabbab Araya (later Dejazmach) met Dejazmach Embaye. Dabbab was taken prisoner by Ras Alula Engida's followers two weeks later. [Haggai Erlich, "Ras Alula and the Scramble for Africa" (Lawrenceville: Red Sea Press, 1996), p. 145] After the Italian conquest, a telegraph office was opened in the town on 22 April 1936, and a post office on 1 July.
