Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is an academic researcher, teacher, entrepreneur, technical advisor and business man. He is a co-founder of the two largest EDA companies: Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, Inc., a recipient of Phil Kaufman Award, 2001.
Born in Milan, Italy, he attended the Classic Lyceum there and is fluent in ancient Greek and Latin. He received his engineering doctrate a Dottore in Ingegneria (doctor of engineering) degree summa cum laude from the Politecnico di Milano in 1971. In 1976 he left there, where he was the youngest person to become an associate professor, for a position at the University of California at Berkeley.
