footnotes =Mrs Justice Susan Denham is a Judge of the
Supreme Court of Ireland and is the longest serving member of the court who is scheduled to retire in 2015 after 23 years on the court.From 1995-98, she chaired the working group on a Courts Commission, which was responsible for probably the most significant reform of the organisation of the courts since the foundation of the state. It led directly to the establishment of the Courts Service, which she chairs.
Susan Denham was born in
Dublin in 1945 and educated inTrinity College Dublin ,Columbia University and theKing's Inns . Justice Denham practiced as a barrister from 1971 and worked on the Midland circuit for 8 years thereafter she just based herself in Dublin. She was involved in a number of leading cases whilst a junior barrister and a senior counsel particularly in the area of judicial review. She became a High Court judge in 1991 and came to wider attention in 1992 when she was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court.She is the daughter of the former
Irish Times editor,Douglas Gageby ; and the sister of leading criminal barrister Patrick Gageby S.C. Justice Denham is one of the Pro-Chancellors of Trinity College Dublin.References
