Bathycles of Magnesia was an
Ionia n sculptor ofMagnesia on the Maeander . He was commissioned by theSparta ns to make a marblethrone for the statue ofApollo atAmyclae , about 550 BC. Pausanias ( [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?lookup=Paus.+3.18.1 iii.18] ) gives us a detailed description of this monument, which is of the greatest value to us, showing the character of Ionic art at the time. It was adorned with scenes from mythology in relief and supporting figures in the round.References
