Hugo Ricciardi O'Neill

Hugo Ricciardi O'Neill

Dr. Hugo Ricciardi O'Neill (Lisbon, Encarnação, March 7, 1939 –) is the current head of the Clanaboy O'Neill dynasty, whose family has been in Portugal since the 18th century. He is officially recognized by the offices of arms throughout Europe as titular Prince and Count of Clanaboy, but he refuses to use this title, using instead the style O'Neill of Clannaboy. He is the first child and only son of the previous head Jorge Maria O'Neill (himself a descendant of the Dukes of Braganza and King John I of Portugal) and wife Josefina Luísa Roquette Ricciardi, great-granddaughter of Alfredo Augusto das Neves Holtreman, 1st Viscount of Alvalade and nephew of José Alfredo Holtreman Roquette (aka José Alvalade), Founder of Sporting Clube de Portugal (often erroneously known as "Sporting Lisbon")). He is also the Representative of the title of Viscount of Santa Mónica, in Portugal.

Another branch of the O'Neill clan known as the O'Neill of the Fews of Tyrone is headed by Don Carlos O'Neill, the 12th Marquess of la Granja. He was declared the Tanist or heir by the O'Neill clan in 1991. Since the apparent accession of Hugo Ricciardi there appears to be some confusion about who is the true "O'Neill" and heir to the throne of Ulaid.

Since the Carnation Revolution he spends most of his time living in Ulster and claims to feel better living there than in Portugal. In Portugal he lives at his Quinta das Machadas de Cima, in Setúbal.

Career

He is an Autonomous Consultant and a MA "Honoris Causa" by the National University of Ireland, Galway and the Chairman of The Standing Council of Irish Chiefs and Chieftains, etc. ["Anuário da Nobreza de Portugal", III, 2006, Tomo III, pg. 1.394]

Marriage

He married at the Chapel of the Quinta do Bonjardim, in Belas, Sintra, on October 10, 1962 to his cousin Rosa Maria de Sousa Coutinho Empis, born in Lisbon, Mercês, on February 2, 1936, daughter of Raúl Júlio Empis (Lisbon, Encarnação, February 28, 1887 –), of paternal Walloon descent and son of Bankers, and wife (m.
