minesweeper , was laid down28 June 1939 at theNorfolk Navy Yard , Virginia; launched24 August 1940 ; sponsored by Miss Margaret Kays; and commissioned16 December 1940 , Lt. Cdr. C. L. Blackwell in command.World War II North Africa Operations
The
United States ’ entrance intoWorld War II extended USS Osprey’s coastal patrol and escort duties first to theCaribbean area and by8 November toNorth Africa . On D-Day she helped direct and protect the waves of landing craft moving shoreward atPort Lyautey ,Morocco .Antisubmarine patrol offCasablanca preceded her return to another year of coastal escort assignments out ofNorfolk, Virginia .Operation Overlord Participation
On
3 April 1944 the minesweeper departed forEngland to take part inOperation Overlord . With other units of MinRon 7 she had successfully conducted sweeping operations off offTor Bay ,England but5 June , en route to the Normandy invasion beaches, USS Osprey struck an enemy mine. The crew put out the resultant fires but could not save their valiant vessel. She sank that evening and was struck from theNavy List 22 August 1944 .Awards
