William John Sweeney (born
5 January 1950 ) is a Scottishcomposer .Biography
Born in
Glasgow , he attendedKnightswood Secondary School . He studied the clarinet and composition at theRoyal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from 1967 to 1970, and at theRoyal Academy of Music from 1970 to 1973, where his teachers includedAlan Hacker andHarrison Birtwistle . He went on to teachwoodwind instruments, and then composition at theUniversity of Glasgow . An early influence was the Europeanavant-garde , particularlyKarlheinz Stockhausen , though he returned totonal composition in the mid-1970s.His work is strongly influenced by traditional Scottish
folk music ; in particular, he has utilised theheterophonic style of Gaelicpsalm -singing, and thepiobaireachd form; he varies melodies throughornamentation , as in traditionalpibroch , and in their contour; he modifies instruments' tone-colours through alternative fingerings. He has a strong regard for the music ofLeos Janacek . He has also addressed the reconciliation of classical and traditional music withjazz , usingimprovisation al techniques and sometimes combining the two idioms. He has been influenced byancient Greek poetry , andIndia n and Arab traditions in his use ofostinato and other techniques of variedrepetition .elected works
