Charles H. Leavy

Charles Henry Leavy (February 16, 1884 - September 25, 1952) was a U.S. Representative and U.S. District Judge from Washington.

Born on a farm near York, Pennsylvania, Leavy moved to Kansas City, Missouri, with his parents in 1887. He attended the public schools of Missouri, the Warrensburg (Missouri) Normal School, the Bellingham (Washington) Normal School, and the Kansas City (Missouri) School of Law. He taught school near Independence, Missouri from 1903 to 1906, and at Everson, Touchet, Kahlotus, and Connell, Washington from 1906 to 1913. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1912 and commenced practice in Newport, Washington. He served as prosecuting attorney of Pend Oreille County, Washington from 1915 to 1918. He moved to Spokane, Washington, in 1918. He served as special assistant United States district attorney for eastern Washington 1918-1921. He served as prosecuting attorney of Spokane County, Washington from 1922 to 1926. He served as judge of the superior court of the State of Washington 1926-1936.

Leavy was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth, Seventy-sixth, and Seventy-seventh Congresses and served from January 3, 1937, until his resignation on August 1, 1942, having been appointed United States district judge of the western district of Washington and served until his retirement September 1, 1952. He died in Tacoma, Washington, September 25, 1952, and was interred in Mountain View Memorial Park, Tacoma, Washington.
