The Army Reserve's 65th Cavalry Division was created due to the perceived need for additional cavalry units. It was numbered in succession with the Regular Army Divisions, not all of which were active at its creation. Going into World War 2, the US Army Cavalry was comprised of 3 Regular, 4 National Guard, and 6 Organized Reserve cavalry divisions as well as 1 independent cavalry brigade (the 56th from Texas).
