Joseph Hodson Outhwaite (
December 5 ,1841 -December 9 ,1907 ) was a U.S. Representative fromOhio .Born in
Cleveland, Ohio , Outhwaite attended the public schools ofZanesville, Ohio .He taught in the high school of that city 1862-1864. Principal of a grammar school inColumbus, Ohio from 1864 to 1867.He studied law while teaching.He was admitted to the bar in 1866 and practiced from 1867 to 1871 atOsceola, Missouri .He served as prosecuting attorney ofFranklin County, Ohio from 1874 to 1878. Trustee of the county children's home 1879-1883. Trustee of the sinking fund of the city of Columbus in 1883. Reappointed in 1884 for a term of five years.Outhwaite was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth and to the four succeeding Congresses (
March 4 ,1885 -March 3 ,1895 ).He served as chairman of the Committee on Pacific Railroads (Fiftieth Congress), Committee on Military Affairs (Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses).He was appointed a member of the commission to codify the laws of the United States. Civilian member of the Board of Ordnance and Fortification 1895-1899.He served as member of the board of trustees ofOhio State University at Columbus from December 1896 to January 1898. Dean of the law school ofOhio State University from 1904 until his death inColumbus, Ohio ,December 9 ,1907 .He was interred in Greenlawn Cemetery.ource
