- Gifu Great Buddha
.
Construction
The Gifu Great Buddha is unique for how it was constructed. First, a central pillar was built using wood from the
ginkgo tree. The Buddha's shape was then formed usingbamboo lattices. The bamboo was covered with clay to add shape and scriptures were then placed upon the clay. Finally, the scriptures were covered inlacquer andgold leaf , giving the Buddha the appearance that it has today. [http://www.gifu-daibutsu.com/shohoji/english.html Gifu Shouhouji Daibutsu] .
