Freddrenna Lyle

Freddrenna Lyle is alderman of the 6th ward, in Chicago. She was appointed to the office by Mayor Daley in 1999.

Early History

Lyle has lived in the Park Manor neighborhood for more than 45 years. She attended Park Manor Elementary School and South Shore High School. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her law degree from John Marshall Law School.

Public Service

Lyle was President of the Cook County Bar Association, board member of the National Bar Association, member of the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness, and co-chair of the Lawyer’s Committee for Harold Washington. She also served on Governor Blagojevich’s transition team. She is currently a member of Park Manor Neighbors, Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, NAACP, and Rainbow/PUSH.

Aldermanic career

Lyle was appointed alderman in 1999 by Richard M. Daley to fill the unexpired term of John Steele. She was reelected for a full term in 1999 and 2003.

Lyle served on the negotiating team for the remapping of Chicago wards. She sponsored a resolution for a moratorium on the death penalty in 2000; she also co-sponsored the Living Wage, Predatory Lending, and Anti-War resolutions.

As alderman, Lyle has brought the first new classrooms to her ward in over 38 years with the Deneen Elementary School addition. She is working toward community development by organizing a three year process to revitalize the commercial area of 71st Street. Lyle started Lyle for Kids, an organization which provides supervised recreation for kids throughout the summer.

Lyle serves on four committees: Parks and Recreation; Economic Development; Traffic and Public Safety; and Rules and Ethics.
