July 22 ,1837 -November 22 ,1906 ) was a U.S. Representative fromTennessee .Born in
Montevallo, Alabama , Caldwell moved to Tennessee in 1844 with his parents, who settled near Nashville.He attended the common schools.He was graduated from Franklin College, Tennessee, in 1854.He taught school in Nashville 1854-1857.He moved to Trenton in 1857 and studied law. During the Civil War served in theConfederate States Army as a private and regimental quartermaster in the First Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry.He resumed his law studies.He was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1867 and commenced the practice of law inNashville, Tennessee . Attorney general for the district of Davidson and Rutherford Counties, Tennessee from 1870 to 1878.He served as a member of the State house of representatives in 1880 and 1882.Caldwell was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses (
March 4 ,1883 -March 3 ,1887 ).He was not a candidate for reelection to the Fiftieth Congress.He resumed the practice of law.He died inNashville, Tennessee ,November 22 ,1906 .He was interred in Mount Olivet Cemetery.ource
