Richard Steere Aldrich (
February 29 ,1884 -December 25 ,1941 ) was a U.S. Representative fromRhode Island , son ofNelson Wilmarth Aldrich .Aldrich was born in
Washington, D.C. where his father was serving in Congress. Aldrich was a descendant of John Steere, one of the earliest settlers in Providence. [James Pierce Root, "Steere Genealogy: A Record of the Descendants of John Steere, who Settled in Providence, Rhode Island, about the year 1660," (Providence: Riverside Press, 1890).] Aldrich attended the public schools inProvidence, Rhode Island .He was graduated from Hope Street High School at Providence in 1902, fromYale University in 1906, and from the law department ofHarvard University in 1909.He was admitted to the bar in 1911 and commenced the practice of law in New York City.He returned toProvidence, Rhode Island , in 1913 and continued the practice of his profession.He served as member of theRhode Island House of Representatives 1914-1916.He served in the State senate 1916-1918.Aldrich was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-eighth and to the four succeeding Congresses (
March 4 ,1923 -March 3 ,1933 ).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1932.He resumed legal pursuits inProvidence, Rhode Island , until his death there onDecember 25 ,1941 .He was interred inSwan Point Cemetery .ources and references
