"Poospiza" is a genus of finch-like tanagers [Klicka et al (2007)] found in both the South American lowlands and the Andes mountains. Generally they are arboreal feeders in light woodland and scrub. They are characterised by bold often rufous and grey colouration [Ridgely & Tudor (1989) pp.453-460] . Despite many similarities in plumage the genus appears to consist of four groups each of which are paraphyletic with representatives of six other tanager genera ["Cnemoscopus", "Cypsnagra", "Hemispingus", "Nephelornis", "Pyrrhocoma", "Thlypopsis"] all forming a well-supported clade [Lougheed et al (2000)] . Lougheed [Lougheed et al (2000)] studied twelve of the seventeen species and consistently recovered the following four groups:

* 1) "Poospiza hypochondria, P. caesar"
* 2) "P. torquata, P. melanoleuca, P. alticola, P. erythrophrys"
* 3) "P. baeri, P. garleppi"
* 4) "P. ornata, P. boliviana"

"P. caesar" was formerly classified in the monotypic genus "Poospizopsis" while "P. baeri" and "P. garleppi" were placed in "Compsospiza". These genera may be resurrected when this clade is studied comprehensively.
