Hunterville is a small community in the Rangitikei district of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 50 km north of Palmerston North, about 25 km south of Mangaweka, and 5 km west of the Rangitikei River. It has a population (2001 census) of 507. Hunterville is famous for its statue of the Huntaway, a unique sheep-herding dog, in that it uses its voice to drive the sheep. Hunterville was founded in 1884 by a merchant named George Hunter. It straddles the state highway as well as the main trunk railway in the foothills forming the gateway to the Central Plateau.The closest airport or airfield to Hunterville is Ohakea Aerodrome which is sited 33 km to the south west. Six kilometres north of Hunterville is Vinegar Hill, a popular year-round campsite that hosts the large annual gay and lesbian camp over the Christmas/New year period.
