John G. Kennedy (physician)

Dr. John G. Kennedy is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York who specializes in sports-related injuries of the lower limb.

Dr. John G. Kennedy is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, who has specialized in sports injuries of the lower limb. As well, he is a tumor-trained orthopaedic surgeon.

Dr. Kennedy came to Hospital for Special Surgery in 2002 to pursue a higher degree in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle surgery as well as to coordinate research activities in the Foot and Ankle department. After completing his Fellowship in 2003, Dr. Kennedy stayed at HSS full time to work as an Attending Surgeon. He also became the Director of Research for the Foot and Ankle Department as well as the Director of the Running Center it the hospital.

Dr. Kennedy obtained his Medical Doctor degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1989, where he was the European Foil Fencing Champion and also played fullback for the Beaumont Hospital rugby team. He then went on to complete his studies in Orthopaedics & Traumatology at the same institution from 1989 to 1995. He has since completed the following fellowships:

*Orthopaedic Oncologic Surgery, Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center Cornell Medical School , New York, US

*Pediatric Orthopaedics, Children's Hospital Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, US

*Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, St. Elizabeth Medical Center: Tufts Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, US

Dr. Kennedy's interest in sports-related injuries has led him to publish articles on running injuries, cycling injuries, ballet injuries, and ankle instability following sports injuries.

While in college, Dr. Kennedy was active competitor in national and international levels in diverse sports such as rugby, track, water skiing and fencing, holding at one point the European Championship title in foil fencing. As well, Dr. Kennedy is a third-generation pilot and enjoys piloting aircraft.
