The 1st Punjab Regiment was a British Indian Army regiment from 1922 to the partition of India in 1947. Thereafter it was a regiment of the Pakistan Army until 1956 when it was merged with three other Punjab Regiments to form the Punjab Regiment.

The regiment was formed by the amalgamation of other regiments:
*1st Battalion, from 62nd Punjabis
*2nd Battalion, from 66th Punjabis
*3rd Battalion, from 76th Punjabis
*4th Battalion, from 1st Brahmans
*5th Battalion, from 82nd Punjabis
*10th (Training) Battalion, formed by redesignation of 84th Punjabis

History

The first battalion's history goes back to formation in 1759 as "Coast Sepoys". The first four battalions were raised during the hostilities in the Carnatic in south India between 1761 and 1776. The numbers and titles of the battalions changed during the successive reorganisations of the Madras Presidency Army and later of the British Indian Army.

Ram Sarup Singh won a Victoria Cross on 25 October 1944 at Kennedy Peak
