- George David Cummins
George David Cummins (1822-76) was an American
bishop . He was born inDelaware , graduated fromDickinson College in 1841, and entered the Methodist ministry. In 1845 he took orders in the Episcopal church and wasrector of several Episcopal churches inVirginia , Washington, andChicago . He was chosen Assistant Bishop ofKentucky in 1866 and laterBishop of Chicago . He gave up his seat as bishop after a number of changes in Church doctrine and practice. Among them was allowing more liberal views of the Bible, ending the traditional cooperation between Episcopalians andPresbyterian s that included exchange of ministers, and ending the practice to allow baptized Christians from other denominations to participate in communion. In 1873, Bishop Cummins founded theReformed Episcopal Church , of which he was the first presiding bishop, inNew York City .Publications
