The Burghead transmitting station is a
broadcasting facility nearBurghead (gbmapping|NJ125685) inScotland for long- and medium-wave radio transmission that started service on12 October 1936 . [ [http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/newspapers/search_results.jsp?newspaper=0&PrimarySubject=0&startyear=*&endyear=*&keywords=bbc+burghead&StartRow=0&MaxRows=25&x=0&y=0 Inverness Courier 13th October 1936] ] The site is owned byNational Grid Wireless and houses a long wave radio transmitter on 198 kHz broadcastingBBC Radio 4 and two medium wave radio transmitters, broadcasting BBC Radio Five Live on 693 kHz and BBC Radio Scotland on 810 kHz. The long wave transmitter is part of a network transmitting on the same frequency, the other transmitters being at the Droitwich and Westerglen.One guyed mast is used for the medium wave transmitters. The mast has a triangular section and is insulated against ground. The antenna for the longwave transmitter consists of a T-aerial spanned between two guyed steel lattice masts.
Part of the original building was demolished leaving a much smaller building for the more modern transmitters.
