Teeworlds is a fast-paced sidescrolling multiplayer-only shoot 'em up computer game. The game features cartoon-themed graphics and physics, and relies heavily on classic shooter weaponry and gameplay. The controls are heavily inspired by the First-person shooter genre of computer games. The latest release is 0.4.3. With version 0.4.0 the game changed name from Teewars to Teeworlds, the developers citing unspecific legal reasonscite web | url=http://www.teeworlds.com/?page=journal&id=942 | title="About the name change" | accessdate=2008-03-25] .

Teeworlds is still under development, but it is playable and can be downloaded free of charge at the [http://www.teeworlds.com Teeworlds home page] . Versions for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X are currently available. In December 2007, the source code was made available to the public, enabling enthusiasts to port it to run on other platforms such as *BSD. It is reported to run well under Wine (which shouldn't be needed since it runs natively in Linux distributions).

Basic gameplay

Teeworlds presents as a crossover from the classic sprite-based shoot-em-up games of the arcade era and modern-day first-person shooters. It is played on typical two-dimensional, side-scrolling platform-style maps, but utilizes FPS-style keyboard controls for moving, switching weapons and chatting. A mouse reticle is used for aiming. The game also sports a grappling hook and double-jump mechanics for maneuvering.

The weapons are inspired by FPS games such as the Quake and Unreal series, featuring regular pistols and shotguns as well as the more exotic grenade / rocket launcher and a wooden mallet for close combat. Weapons are distributed throughout the map, and can be picked-up and refilled by the player simply walking over them. A sword / katana is also available in some maps.

The grappling hook and double jump provide extended mobility, allowing advanced players to dodge incoming fire and quickly maneuver around the map.

With the release of version 0.4.0, the development team added a new weapon, the laser rifle. This new weapon has given rise to the Instagib mode (available via an unsupported server-side mod) in which shooting an opponent instantly kills them.

Game modes

Teeworlds currently sports Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag. Another unofficial game mode is the Race mode where one flag is hidden so that only the other team can score. The first person on that team to touch the visible flag wins.

Clans

When the community behind Teeworlds started to expand many players grouped up with friends or other players and formed what has become known as clans. Although it is an unsupported feature, many clans have developed over time with their own sites, forums and servers. Clans usually have anywhere between five to thirty members, although there are alliances consisting of several clans which count up to a hundred members or more. From time to time clans face each other in clan battles which to some degree measure two clans up. Next to a full name every clan has adopted a tag which is usually placed in front of a players name. Due to absence of any registration it is quite possible for non-official members to use this tag in front of their names and thereby 'claim' membership of a specific clan. The only real way to battle this is for official members to know each other well enough to recognize the real members from these fake ones.
