Stojan Čupić

Stojan Čupić

Stojan Čupić (Cyrillic: Стојан Чупић, 1765-1815), also known as "Zmaj od Noćaja" ("the Dragon of Noćaj" in English), was a Serbian voivod in the First Serbian Uprising. He was born in Piva in Herzegovina and his original surname was Dobrilović. Later, Stojan came to Salaš Noćajski in Mačva where he was adopted by Strahinja Čupić, and therefore gained surname Čupić. When became adult, Stojan Čupić was a pig trader. During the First Serbian Uprising, he was one of the most important leaders of the uprising. Čupić gained his glory after battle of Salaš, and also participated in battle of Mišar, battle of Glavica, battle of Klenje, battle of Bajina Bašta, battle of Ravnje, etc. He was killed in Zvornik by Turks and there are two different stories about his death: according to one version, he was betrayed by his kmets who handed him over to the Turks, while according to other version, it was Miloš Obrenović, the leader of the Second Serbian Uprising, who handed over Čupić to the Turks because he saw him as a rival in a struggle over power.
