Tom Cahill (footballer)

Tom Cahill (footballer)

Tom Cahill is an English footballer, playing for Rotherham United in League Two. Tom plays as a striker and is a strong runner with good technical ability and an eye for goal.

Cahill signed a two year deal with the Millers at the start of the 2007/08 season, moving from non-league Matlock Town. The UniBond Premier League side received no fee for the 20-year old, but they did manage to negotiate a 10% sell-on clause, three pre-season friendlies with the Millers over a five-year period, and first refusal on any youngsters that Rotherham are prepared to release on loan deals.

Cahill had looked set to move to the U.S. to start a soccer scholarship upon completion of a law degree at Sheffield University, but the South Yorkshire club moved quickly to sign him up after he impressed on trial in their reserves' 4-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at the end of last season.

Cahill hails from Euxton in Lancashire [ [http://www.chorleyonline.com/news.asp?2023 Euxton lad set for Football League:chorleyonline.com ] ] and was schooled in Leyland at St Mary's High School and Runshaw College, where he was a member of their successful Football Academy. He played for West Lancashire League side Euxton Villa for several years before deciding to play with Matlock during the University term, and made a name for himself during the 2006/07 season when he scored a stunning winner against Histon in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

Since his move to Rotherham, Cahill has been hit with niggling injury's, but has taken part in reserve games, and scored one goal for the reserves. Cahill got his first appearance for Rotherham, when he came on as a sub in the last 15 minutes in Rotherham's 3-2 win over Mansfield Town, and had two decent chances and looked promising.

After two injuries and due to lack of match fitness, Cahill was sent on loan Altrincham for a month, along with centre half Liam King starting 6 games and appearing as a substitute in 5 scoring one goal.

Tom returned to Rotherham United towards the end of March, making a very positive impact when coming off the bench against Morecambe. Due the the Millers' financial crisis and subsequent dip in form, it is expected that Cahill will make frequent appearances in the remaining games, and could be the one to watch if he fulfills his promise.
